<p>Perplexity AI’s latest Web browser, Comet, has introduced features that allow users to order meals directly from restaurants and automate professional tasks on LinkedIn. The update was revealed by cofounder and CEO Aravind Srinivas on X (formerly Twitter).</p>
<p>Comet, currently in invite-only beta, is not just another browser. It is built around what Perplexity calls agentic AI; a browsing assistant that can think, act, and execute commands on a user’s behalf using natural language. As interest in AI-powered tools continues to grow, Perplexity appears to be positioning Comet as an ambitious alternative to traditional browsing tools like Google Chrome.</p>
<h3><span style=”color: #ba372a;”><strong>Food Ordering Without Delivery Apps</strong></span></h3>
<p>In his post, Srinivas explained that Comet users have found ways to place food orders directly from restaurants such as Chipotle, skipping third-party delivery apps. The aim is to reduce user friction and lower costs.</p>
<p>“Use Comet to order food directly from the restaurant (e.g., Chipotle) instead of an aggregator delivery app. Cheaper. Friction of having to deal with random websites gone. And you still get the same meal delivered,” Srinivas wrote.</p>

<p>This functionality, while not originally marketed as a core feature, emerged from user experimentation. It enables a more direct transaction with restaurants, cutting out commission-heavy intermediaries and simplifying the ordering process.</p>

<p>Beyond food delivery, Comet is also making its mark in the professional space. Srinivas noted that the browser can handle a variety of tasks on LinkedIn, from sending personalised messages to creating posts and finding specific individuals.</p>
<p>These functions further illustrate Comet’s broader ambition: becoming a centralised platform for daily tasks that typically require hopping across multiple websites or apps.</p>

<p>Unlike traditional browsers that rely on tabbed interfaces and user-driven navigation, Comet reimagines the experience through a single AI-driven interface. It allows users to prompt actions such as translating content, summarising webpages, comparing products, or performing contextual follow-ups without ever opening a new tab.</p>
<p>Srinivas elaborated on his vision for Comet’s future, calling it an “AI operating system” designed to operate seamlessly in the background, reducing the need for manual input.</p>
<h3><span style=”color: #ba372a;”><strong>Not Worried About Big Tech Competition</strong></span></h3>
<p>Although the AI browser space is becoming increasingly competitive, Srinivas said he is not worried about companies like OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic emulating Comet.</p>
<p>“It takes time to build something like this. They can’t win in every sector,” he said.</p>
<p>A recent Reuters report from July 9 noted that OpenAI is also working on an AI-powered browser aimed at challenging Google’s dominance in search. However, Srinivas appears confident that Comet’s head start and distinct approach will help it stand out.</p>
<h3><span style=”color: #ba372a;”><strong>Backed by Nvidia, Rolling Out in Beta</strong></span></h3>
<p>Perplexity, which is backed by Nvidia, introduced Comet earlier this month as part of its broader strategy to compete with Chrome. The browser is currently accessible to premium users via invite, though some free user invites are also being distributed. Certain premium features are expected to remain paywalled even after a broader rollout.</p>
<p>With AI increasingly integrated into consumer tools, Comet represents a bold shift towards AI-first browsing, aiming not just to assist users, but to act on their behalf.</p>
