It is a picture India cannot look away from: a two-time MP left bloodied, clutching his face with a blood-soaked gamchha after his car was attacked by a mob in Nagrakata in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district. Khagen Murmu, the BJP MP from Maldaha Uttar, was attacked along with party MLA Shankar Ghosh while they were visiting areas hit by floods and landslides in North Bengal. Shocking footage shows the car carrying the leaders being surrounded and its glass smashed, forcing them to flee even as the crowd refused to back off.
The question is: where was the police? How could this happen in broad daylight? Even though the mob knew they were being filmed, not one person backed off – what gives them that courage?
