Himanta Defends ‘Miya-Muslim’ Remark, Slams Opposition Over Criticism

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has defended his controversial ‘Miya-Muslim’ remark, saying that those who came from Bangladesh refer to themselves as ‘Miya’ and that he did not coin the term. Speaking in Golaghat, Sarma hit out at the opposition for criticising his statement, even as his earlier remarks triggered a political storm in poll-bound Assam. The comments have intensified the debate around migration, identity, and rhetoric ahead of the elections.
