A political row has erupted after Droupadi Murmu questioned why a Santal community conference was held far from areas where many members of the community live. The President said the location made it difficult for many Santal people to attend and also remarked that when the President visits, the Chief Minister and ministers should ideally be present. Responding to the remarks, Mamata Banerjee said certain comments may not suit a constitutional post and defended her government’s work for the Santal community in West Bengal. The chief minister added that her government would present details of its work to the President.
