Explained: Why Hormuz Closure Could Trigger Biggest Oil Shock Ever

A potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most critical energy chokepoint, could remove nearly 20 million barrels of oil per day from global markets, far exceeding the supply disruptions seen in previous oil crises. Nearly 20% of the world’s oil trade passes through the narrow waterway every day, making any blockade a major threat to global energy security. For comparison, the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the 1973 Arab oil embargo, the Iran–Iraq War, the 1990 Gulf crisis, and disruptions following the Russia–Ukraine war each removed far smaller volumes from global supply. Analysts warn that if shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is significantly disrupted, the resulting shock could surpass all previous oil supply crises combined, with severe consequences for global markets and energy prices. NDTV’s Arjun Samar Mahendran brings all the details.
