India and China have pledged to strengthen their partnership during a meeting on the sidelines of the key SCO Summit today. As both nations committed to taking their ties forward, Chinese President Xi Jinping remarked that it is vital for India and China-the dragon and the elephant-to come together as friends. However, this display of bonhomie hasn’t gone down well with the opposition in India.
The Congress Party raised the 2020 Galwan clash, questioning whether India has received any justice for the soldiers who lost their lives. The party accused Prime Minister Modi of constantly shifting friendships-from Donald Trump to now, Xi Jinping. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also demanded clarification on whether India’s total landmass has decreased following alleged Chinese occupation.
The DMK, taking a swipe at the PM, cited Nehru and said that while Modi once threatened China with a “laal aankh,” all he got in return was a “laal welcome”-a gesture even Nehru never received. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi added that the Modi-Xi meeting failed to address any substantive issues. So the big question: Is the opposition genuinely concerned about national interest-or simply unhappy with the optics of Modi-Xi ‘dosti’?
