In this special series we bring you stories of valour and exemplary courage when India came under attack in 1962. On November 17, 1962, the Battle of Nurarang began with the Chinese attacking the Indian position in waves. Rifleman Rawat, along with Lance Naik Trilok Singh Negi and Rifleman Gopal Singh Gusain continued to fight with help from local Monpa women, Sela and Nura. For 72 gruelling hours, he single-handedly inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy before making the ultimate sacrifice. His unwavering dedication became a legend which inspired generations of soldiers. Rawat’s courage in facing the Chinese army led to the establishment of this memorial at the very spot of his heroic stand. He was posthumously honoured with India’s second-highest military award, the Mahavir Chakra.
