In the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi raised concerns over India’s energy security in the context of the India-US trade understanding. He alleged that the agreement could allow the United States to influence or dictate from whom India purchases oil, including countries such as Russia or Iran.
Rahul Gandhi warned that such an arrangement would undermine India’s strategic autonomy, claiming that non-compliance could invite punitive tariff hikes – potentially up to 50%. He argued that energy security is directly linked to India’s food security, data economy, and long-term national interests, and cautioned against compromising sovereign decision-making.
