From Kerala To West Bengal To Delhi? The Renaming Debate Widens

The Union Cabinet’s approval to officially rename Kerala as “Keralam” has sparked a nationwide political debate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the move reflects cultural pride and the aspirations of the people, emphasising the state’s rich heritage and identity. However, Mamata Banerjee questioned why her government’s long-pending proposal to rename West Bengal as “Bangla” has not received similar approval. The BJP hit back, accusing her of politicising the issue and rejecting claims of any broader implications. Meanwhile, the renaming debate has expanded to the national capital, with Praveen Khandelwal writing to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging that Delhi be renamed “Indraprastha,” citing its ancient historical roots linked to the Mahabharata era.
