“Indian Ocean Is The Only Ocean Named After A Country”

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar spoke about India’s growing role in the Indian Ocean region, highlighting the need to back the idea of an “Indian Ocean identity” with concrete resources, commitments and practical projects. Jaishankar said building a strong regional sentiment requires sustained work and cooperation among countries connected to the Indian Ocean. He also noted that the Indian Ocean remains the only ocean named after a country, emphasizing India’s central geographical and strategic position in the region. The minister added that as India continues to grow, other nations in the Indian Ocean region stand to benefit, particularly those that choose to work closely with New Delhi. Jaishankar stressed that the rise of India will ultimately be determined by the country’s own strength and capabilities, not by the weaknesses or mistakes of others.
