WASHINGTON — Northrop Grumman stated April 21 it took a $71 million charge in its fiscal first quarter related to an anomaly with a strong rocket booster that has grounded the Vulcan Centaur rocket.

In a commentary about its first-quarter monetary effects, the corporate stated its Area Methods department recorded a $71 million “negative adjustment” to income at finishing touch on its GEM 63XL booster “related to a release anomaly that came about right through the primary quarter.”

The GEM 63XL solid-fuel booster is used on United Release Alliance’s Vulcan Centaur rocket. On a Feb. 12 launch, one in all 4 boosters shed particles about 65 seconds after liftoff. The “commentary,” as ULA termed it to start with, didn’t impact the good fortune of the U.S.-87 project, hanging its payload into its deliberate geosynchronous orbit.

ULA later known as the incident a “vital efficiency anomaly” with the booster that it could examine sooner than returning Vulcan to flight. The car has now not introduced since then.

Northrop’s income commentary didn’t supply any further details about the issue with the GEM 63XL, and corporate executives discussed it simplest in passing right through an income name. In its 10-Q filing with the Securities and Trade Fee April 21, Northrop stated the charge used to be for “the analysis and implementation of corrective movements for a strong rocket motor anomaly that came about right through a Q1 2026 release.”

Area Pressure officers stated on the fresh forty first Area Symposium that there used to be no timeline for returning Vulcan to flight. The carrier used to be operating with each Northrop and ULA to resolve the foundation reason for the ambiguity observed within the February release, with some “take a look at actions” deliberate within the close to long term.

The Area Pressure added it was considering returning Vulcan to flight in a configuration where it does not use any GEM 63XL boosters. In that configuration, it would release some low-energy missions that don’t require the extra thrust the boosters supply, akin to payloads for the Area Building Company’s constellations of missile-tracking and communications satellites.

“If it doesn’t depend on solids, there’s no reason we will be able to’t release,” stated Lt. Gen. Philip Garrant, head of Area Methods Command.

The February release used to be the second one time in 4 missions {that a} GEM 63XL booster suffered an issue. On Vulcan’s 2nd flight, Cert-2 in October 2024, the nozzle of one in all two boosters indifferent about 35 seconds into the flight. An investigation blamed the incident on a manufacturing defect in an insulator inside the nozzle.

That ended in adjustments to the nozzle design carried out sooner than Vulcan’s subsequent release in August 2025. “The ones are entire and in the back of us,” John Elbon, appearing leader govt of ULA, stated in a decision with journalists simply sooner than the U.S.-87 release.
